Condoms are one of the most effective ways to prevent pregnancy and reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections – but only when they are used correctly every time. Most problems come from simple mistakes. Here is how to get it right.

Before you start

  • Check the expiry date printed on the box and the wrapper. Don't use an expired condom.
  • Check the wrapper is sealed. Press it gently – you should feel a small air bubble. If it is torn or dry, throw it away.
  • Store condoms properly – somewhere cool and dry, not in a wallet or a hot car for long periods.

Putting it on

  1. Open the wrapper carefully with your fingers – not your teeth or scissors, which can tear the condom.
  2. Check which way it unrolls. The rim should be on the outside, like a little hat.
  3. Pinch the tip to squeeze out any air and leave space for semen.
  4. Place it on the tip of the erect penis before any genital contact and roll it all the way down to the base.
  5. If you put it on inside-out by mistake, throw it away and use a new one.

During sex

  • Use a water-based or silicone-based lubricant if you want extra comfort. Never use oil, lotion, petroleum jelly or baby oil with latex condoms – they weaken the latex. Browse safe lubricants.
  • If you feel the condom slip or break, stop and replace it.

Taking it off

  1. After ejaculation, hold the rim at the base while withdrawing, before the erection goes down.
  2. Slide it off away from your partner, wrap it in tissue and throw it in the bin – don't flush it.
  3. Use a new condom every time you have sex.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Putting it on halfway through instead of at the start.
  • Using two condoms at once – friction makes breakage more likely.
  • Using the wrong size. If standard condoms feel tight, try a larger fit; if they slip, try a snugger one.
  • Re-using a condom.
